Brain Health and Nutrition

Looking at nutrition through the lens of brain’s health is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.

It’s simple: a healthy brain brings you way closer to a happy life. You feel energized and excited about many things. You become a better person to the people around you and a better learner. Frankly I wish I had known this way earlier, but wellness is a journey and in order to see what works for you, you have to experiment.

Optimizing brain health with nutrition isn’t really about becoming smarter or a super human it’s more about living life to your full potential.

For many years I thought solely about the physical consequences of a diet -not mental- and somehow it made things more confusing. The beauty of brain health is that it works hand in hand with the health of the rest of the body.

The first person who introduced me to this aspect of nutrition was Max Lugavere with his book “Genius Foods.” To this day I still have the notes I took reading this book. Max explores the scientific evidence showing that some food enhance your brain function. Among them: olive oil, avocados, almonds, blueberries, dark chocolate, eggs, grass-fed beef, dark leafy greens, broccoli and wild salmon.

Eating these foods along with having a good lifestyle is a short AND long term investment. You have better capacities to focus and it can help protecting yourself from diseases like Alzheimer, which are sad and brutal. By the way Max Lugavere started being very interested in this topic because of his personal history with this disease which affected his mother.

What I love is that nutrition is something you have control over (on the principle that you are lucky enough to have access to the food you want). Nutrition experts are unanimous to say that what you eat has a big impact on your brain’s health and consequently it can help you thrive and overcome difficult times.
